John Capítulo 20
KJV — King James Version · 31 versículos
The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
Spiritual Insight
Mary came while it was still dark — devotion doesn't wait for convenient hours. She came to mourn, but found an empty tomb instead.
Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
Spiritual Insight
Her first instinct is to run and tell someone. 'They've taken Him away' — she jumps to the worst conclusion, but her love is unmistakable.
Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
Spiritual Insight
Peter and the other disciple don't debate — they run. When someone you love might be in trouble, you don't walk.
So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
Spiritual Insight
The other disciple outran Peter. A small human detail that feels so real — even in crisis, their personalities shine through.
And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
Spiritual Insight
He stooped and looked but didn't go in. Sometimes awe makes us hesitate — the sight of those empty linens stopped him in his tracks.
Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,
Spiritual Insight
Peter, being Peter, goes straight in. He sees the linen lying there — orderly, not rummaged through. Something deliberate happened here.
And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
Spiritual Insight
The face cloth was folded separately — a detail full of meaning. In Jewish tradition, a folded napkin meant the master wasn't finished, he'd be back.
Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
Spiritual Insight
He saw and believed. Sometimes understanding comes not from explanation but from seeing the evidence with your own eyes.
For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
Spiritual Insight
They didn't yet understand the Scripture about resurrection. Belief can precede understanding — faith starts before the full picture is clear.
Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
Spiritual Insight
The disciples went home. It's a quietly human response — when you don't know what else to do, you go back to what's familiar.
But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
Spiritual Insight
But Mary stayed, weeping at the tomb. She couldn't leave — her love kept her rooted there, crying outside an empty grave.
And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
Spiritual Insight
Two angels where His body had been — one at the head, one at the feet. Like the cherubim on the mercy seat, this was holy ground.
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know not where they have laid him.
Spiritual Insight
Even angels ask gentle questions: 'Why are you crying?' Mary's grief is still focused on the missing body — she hasn't yet grasped the miracle.
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
Spiritual Insight
She turns and sees Jesus but doesn't recognize Him. Grief can blind us to the very thing we most long for, even when it's standing right there.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
Spiritual Insight
She thinks He's the gardener — oh, the irony. The One who walked in Eden's garden is mistaken for a groundskeeper. Love makes her persistent though.
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
Spiritual Insight
One word — 'Mary' — and everything changes. He speaks her name and she knows. The Good Shepherd calls His sheep by name.
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
Spiritual Insight
'Don't cling to Me — I haven't yet ascended.' Jesus redirects her from holding on to Him physically to becoming a messenger of His ascension.
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the LORD, and that he had spoken these things unto her.
Spiritual Insight
Mary becomes the first evangelist: 'I have seen the Lord.' From weeping at a tomb to proclaiming resurrection — what a turnaround.
Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
Spiritual Insight
Behind locked doors, Jesus appears and says 'Peace.' Fear locks us in, but Jesus walks through every barrier to bring us calm.
And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the LORD.
Spiritual Insight
He shows them His hands and side — proof that the crucified One is now alive. Their fear turns to joy in an instant.
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
Spiritual Insight
'As the Father sent Me, so I send you.' The same mission, the same authority, the same love — now passed on to us.
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
Spiritual Insight
He breathes on them — like God breathing life into Adam. This is a new creation moment, the Spirit being given to empower their mission.
Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
Spiritual Insight
An extraordinary responsibility: the community of Jesus carries the authority to pronounce forgiveness. This is grace put into human hands.
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
Spiritual Insight
Thomas missed it — he wasn't there that evening. One absence, and he missed the most important moment. But his story isn't over.
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
Spiritual Insight
Thomas needs evidence — not just testimony. 'Unless I see and touch, I won't believe.' Honest doubt isn't condemned; it's given space.
And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
Spiritual Insight
A week later, Jesus shows up again — this time specifically for Thomas. He doesn't shame the doubter; He meets him where he is.
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
Spiritual Insight
'Put your finger here. See My hands. Reach into My side.' Jesus offers exactly what Thomas asked for — no lecture, just invitation.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God.
Spiritual Insight
Thomas doesn't even need to touch — seeing is enough. 'My Lord and my God!' The greatest confession in the Gospels comes from a former doubter.
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Spiritual Insight
A blessing for those of us who haven't seen: 'Blessed are those who believe without seeing.' That's you and me — we're in His beatitude.
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
Spiritual Insight
So much more happened than what's written here. Jesus did countless signs — these are selected, curated for a purpose.
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Spiritual Insight
And here's the purpose: that you might believe and have life. Every word in this Gospel was chosen to lead you to Jesus and the fullness He offers.
