John Capítulo 19

KJV — King James Version · 42 versículos

1

Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

Spiritual Insight

Pilate has Jesus scourged — a brutal, unnecessary cruelty. Even when trying to avoid killing Him, he still inflicts terrible suffering.

2

And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

Spiritual Insight

A crown of thorns pressed into His head — mocking the very kingship they can't see. Cruelty disguised as theater.

3

And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

Spiritual Insight

'Hail, King of the Jews!' they sneer, hitting Him. They're joking about the very truth they're blind to — He really is their King.

4

Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

Spiritual Insight

Pilate keeps saying 'I find no fault in Him' — and yet doesn't release Him. Knowing the truth without acting on it is its own kind of cowardice.

5

Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

Spiritual Insight

'Behold the man!' — beaten, bleeding, wearing a mock crown. And yet, even in this moment, there is a strange, terrible dignity.

6

When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

Spiritual Insight

The crowd's bloodlust is deafening: 'Crucify! Crucify!' Pilate washes his hands of responsibility while handing Jesus over. Complicity dressed as neutrality.

7

The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

Spiritual Insight

Now the real charge comes out: He claimed to be the Son of God. The religious leaders are explicit about what offends them.

8

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

Spiritual Insight

This spooks Pilate even more. 'Son of God' was a category that unsettled Roman superstition — what if this man really was divine?

9

And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

Spiritual Insight

Pilate asks where Jesus comes from, but Jesus is silent. There's a time to speak and a time to let silence be its own answer.

10

Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

Spiritual Insight

Pilate's frustration boils over: 'Don't You know I have power over You?' It's a bluff — his power is borrowed and temporary.

11

Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus calmly puts Pilate in his place: you have no power unless God gave it. And the one who handed Me over bears greater guilt. Stunning composure.

12

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

Spiritual Insight

From here Pilate wants to release Jesus, but political pressure crushes moral courage. 'You're no friend of Caesar' — that threat carries real weight.

13

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Spiritual Insight

Pilate sits on the judgment seat — the place of official authority — and the irony is thick. He's about to condemn the true Judge of all.

14

And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

Spiritual Insight

'Behold your King!' Pilate says, and it's both mockery and unintentional prophecy. Jesus truly is their King, and one day every knee will bow.

15

But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

Spiritual Insight

'We have no king but Caesar.' With those words, the religious leaders abandon their entire identity. Hatred made them choose an emperor over God.

16

Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

Spiritual Insight

It's done. They lead Him away to die. The Creator of the universe, marched off by His own creation to a execution He didn't deserve.

17

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

Spiritual Insight

Jesus carries His own cross to the Place of the Skull. Every step is purposeful — He's walking the road that was always His to walk.

18

Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

Spiritual Insight

Crucified between two others — numbered with the transgressors, just as Scripture said. The Savior of the world, hanging between criminals.

19

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Spiritual Insight

Pilate writes the sign himself: 'Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.' He may have meant it mockingly, but it was the truest thing he ever wrote.

20

This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

Spiritual Insight

The sign was in three languages — Hebrew, Greek, Latin. Everyone could read it. God made sure the whole world knew who was on that cross.

21

Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

Spiritual Insight

The chief priests want the sign changed — not 'King of the Jews' but 'He claimed to be King.' They can't stand even the suggestion of His kingship.

22

Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

Spiritual Insight

'What I have written, I have written.' Even Pilate draws a line somewhere. God used a stubborn politician to declare the truth.

23

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

Spiritual Insight

Soldiers gambling for His clothes while He dies above them. The ordinariness of human cruelty is almost harder to bear than the cruelty itself.

24

They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

Spiritual Insight

Even the soldiers' dice-throw fulfills ancient Scripture. God weaves His purposes through the most unlikely hands.

25

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

Spiritual Insight

The women stayed. While most fled, these faithful few stood at the foot of the cross. Love doesn't run when things get unbearable.

26

When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

Spiritual Insight

Even from the cross, Jesus takes care of His mother. 'Woman, behold your son' — He's entrusting her to John's care in His dying breaths.

27

Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

Spiritual Insight

'Behold your mother.' John took her into his home from that hour. Jesus creates new family even from the cross — love finds a way.

28

After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus knows everything is accomplished, yet He still says 'I thirst' — fully divine and fully human, even in His final moments.

29

Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

Spiritual Insight

Vinegar on a sponge lifted to parched lips — a small, cruel mercy. Yet even this fulfills what the Scriptures foretold.

30

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Spiritual Insight

'It is finished.' Three words that changed everything. Not a cry of defeat but a declaration of completion — the mission is accomplished.

31

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

Spiritual Insight

Religious propriety in the middle of an execution — they want the bodies down before Sabbath. They're meticulous about ritual while missing the horror.

32

Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

Spiritual Insight

Breaking legs sped up death by suffocation — brutal efficiency. The soldiers were just doing their job, which makes it somehow worse.

33

But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

Spiritual Insight

But Jesus was already dead — no legs broken. He laid down His life; no one took it from Him. Even in death, He was in control.

34

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

Spiritual Insight

A spear thrust, and blood and water flow out. Even this detail bears witness — the reality of His death is medically, painfully documented.

35

And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

Spiritual Insight

An eyewitness insists on the truth of what he saw. This isn't legend — it's testimony from someone who was there, wanting you to believe.

36

For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

Spiritual Insight

Not a bone broken — just like the Passover lamb. God's attention to detail is staggering, even in the middle of suffering.

37

And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

Spiritual Insight

They will look on the One they pierced. One day, every eye will see — and the pierced hands will be the proof of love, not judgment.

38

And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

Spiritual Insight

Joseph of Arimathea was a secret disciple, but courage found him at the right moment. He asked for Jesus' body when it mattered most.

39

And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

Spiritual Insight

Nicodemus came at night before, but now he shows up openly with seventy-five pounds of spices. Faith grows bolder when it matters.

40

Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

Spiritual Insight

They wrapped His body with care and with spices — an act of love and dignity. Even in death, Jesus received honor from unexpected hands.

41

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

Spiritual Insight

A garden with a new tomb — the place of death becomes a garden again. Even the setting echoes the story of creation and new beginnings.

42

There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

Spiritual Insight

They laid Him there because it was nearby and time was short. Even the practical details of burial were guided by providence.
