John Chapter 15
KJV — King James Version · 27 verses
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus is the true vine, and the Father is the gardener. Growth starts with being connected to the right source and trusting the one who tends the garden.
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Spiritual Insight
Fruitless branches are removed; fruitful ones are pruned for even more fruit. Even good growth needs trimming. God's cuts are always for greater abundance.
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Spiritual Insight
You are already clean because of the word Jesus spoke. His words wash us — not just inform us. There's cleansing power in truth.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Spiritual Insight
Remain in me, and I in you. A branch can't produce fruit on its own — it must stay connected. Independence sounds brave, but it leads to barrenness.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Spiritual Insight
Apart from me you can do nothing. Not "a little" — nothing. That's not weakness; that's the honest truth about where real fruit comes from.
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Spiritual Insight
A branch that disconnects withers and is gathered for burning. Staying connected isn't optional — it's life itself.
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Spiritual Insight
If you remain in him and his words remain in you, ask whatever you wish. When you're deeply connected, your desires align with his — and he delights to answer.
Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
Spiritual Insight
The Father is glorified when you bear much fruit — that's what proves you're his disciples. Fruitfulness isn't performance; it's the evidence of a real connection.
As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
Spiritual Insight
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. The love we receive is the same love Jesus receives from the Father — full and unending.
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
Spiritual Insight
Keep my commandments and remain in my love, just as I keep my Father's and remain in his. Obedience is the pathway to staying in love's embrace.
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
Spiritual Insight
He said these things so his joy would be in us and our joy would be complete. God's commands aren't burdens — they're the way to fullness of joy.
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Spiritual Insight
Love each other as I have loved you. The standard isn't fairness or reciprocity — it's his sacrificial, unconditional love. That's a high bar.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Spiritual Insight
No greater love than this: to lay down your life for your friends. The highest expression of love isn't a feeling — it's a choice to sacrifice.
Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
Spiritual Insight
You are my friends if you do what I command. Friendship with Jesus has a shape — it's not vague affection, it's lived loyalty.
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
Spiritual Insight
I no longer call you servants — I call you friends. Servants don't know their master's business, but Jesus shares everything he's heard from the Father.
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
Spiritual Insight
You didn't choose me — I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear lasting fruit. Your calling isn't your idea — it's his, and it's purposeful.
These things I command you, that ye love one another.
Spiritual Insight
Love one another. It's so simple and so hard. Jesus repeats it because it's the core — everything else flows from this.
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
Spiritual Insight
If the world hates you, remember it hated me first. Opposition isn't a sign you're doing something wrong — it might be a sign you're doing something right.
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
Spiritual Insight
You don't belong to the world — that's why the world hates you. Being chosen out of the world means you won't always fit in. And that's okay.
Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
Spiritual Insight
No servant is greater than the master. If they persecuted him, they'll persecute you. If they obeyed him, they'll obey you. The pattern is set.
But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
Spiritual Insight
All this will happen because of his name, because they don't know the one who sent him. Ignorance of God is the root of persecution.
If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.
Spiritual Insight
If he hadn't come and spoken, they wouldn't be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse. Encounter with Jesus removes the cover of ignorance.
He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
Spiritual Insight
Hating Jesus is hating the Father. They're that united. You can't reject one and embrace the other.
If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
Spiritual Insight
If he hadn't done works no one else did, they wouldn't be guilty. But they saw and hated both him and the Father. Witnessing miracles and rejecting them is the deepest culpability.
But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
Spiritual Insight
They hated him without reason — fulfilling scripture. Sometimes opposition has no logical explanation. It's just the cost of being faithful.
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Spiritual Insight
The Spirit of truth will come from the Father and testify about Jesus. We're not left to defend him alone — the Holy Spirit is the chief witness.
And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
Spiritual Insight
You also must testify, because you've been with me from the beginning. Personal experience is the foundation of witness — you tell what you've seen and lived.
