Holy Bible/John/Chapter 14

John Chapter 14

KJV — King James Version · 31 verses

1

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

Spiritual Insight

Don't let your heart be troubled — believe in God, believe also in me. In the middle of alarming news, Jesus offers peace anchored in trust.

2

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Spiritual Insight

There are many rooms in the Father's house, and Jesus is going to prepare a place for you. Heaven isn't empty space — it's a prepared home.

3

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Spiritual Insight

He will come back to take you to be with him, so that you'll always be together. The goal isn't a place — it's a Person. Presence is the promise.

4

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Spiritual Insight

You know the way to where I'm going, Jesus says. They actually didn't feel like they knew — but he was about to show them.

5

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

Spiritual Insight

Thomas speaks up honestly: "We don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way?" Thank God for doubters who ask the hard questions.

6

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Spiritual Insight

I am the way, the truth, and the life. Not a map, not a philosophy — a person. The way to God is through relationship, not religion.

7

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Spiritual Insight

If you know me, you know the Father. Knowing Jesus isn't just knowing about him — it's the way we come to know God personally.

8

Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Spiritual Insight

Philip's request is simple: "Just show us the Father, that's enough." He wanted a direct encounter with God — and didn't realize he'd been looking at one.

9

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

Spiritual Insight

Jesus' gentle rebuke: "Have I been with you so long and you still don't know me?" Seeing Jesus is seeing the Father — they are that closely united.

10

Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

Spiritual Insight

The words Jesus speaks aren't his own — the Father living in him does the works. There's a beautiful partnership here: the Father works through the Son.

11

Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

Spiritual Insight

Believe based on the words, or at least believe because of the works. Jesus meets us where we are — if words don't convince, let the evidence speak.

12

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Spiritual Insight

Whoever believes will do the same works — and even greater ones. Not because we're better, but because Jesus goes to the Father. His departure empowers our mission.

13

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

Spiritual Insight

Whatever you ask in his name, he will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Prayer aligned with his character is prayer that moves mountains.

14

If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Spiritual Insight

Ask anything in his name and he will do it. It's not a blank check — it's a promise rooted in relationship. "In his name" means in alignment with who he is.

15

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Spiritual Insight

If you love me, keep my commandments. Obedience isn't about rules — it's the natural response of a heart that genuinely loves.

16

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Spiritual Insight

He will ask the Father to send another Comforter to be with you forever. We're never abandoned — the Spirit comes to stay.

17

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Spiritual Insight

The Spirit of truth — the world can't receive him because it doesn't see or know him. But you know him, because he lives in you. Intimacy with God is internal.

18

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

Spiritual Insight

I will not leave you as orphans — I will come to you. The promise of presence. You are never truly alone, even when it feels like it.

19

Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

Spiritual Insight

The world won't see him anymore, but you will. Because he lives, you will live too. His life is the guarantee of ours.

20

At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

Spiritual Insight

On that day you'll know: I am in the Father, you are in me, and I am in you. A beautiful chain of belonging — we're woven into God's own life.

21

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Spiritual Insight

Whoever loves him and keeps his commands will be loved by the Father, and Jesus will love and reveal himself to them. Love opens the door to deeper revelation.

22

Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

Spiritual Insight

The other Judas asks: why reveal yourself to us and not to the world? It's a fair question — why does intimacy with God seem so selective?

23

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

Spiritual Insight

The answer: love and obedience open the door. If you love him, the Father and Son will come and make their home with you. God moves into a welcoming heart.

24

He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

Spiritual Insight

Those who don't love him don't keep his words. And the words aren't just his — they're the Father's. Rejecting Jesus is rejecting the God who sent him.

25

These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus says these things while still with them. He's preparing them for when he won't be — love teaches ahead of absence.

26

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Spiritual Insight

The Holy Spirit will teach you all things and remind you of everything Jesus said. We have a teacher inside us — one who never forgets what matters.

27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Spiritual Insight

Peace he leaves with us — not the world's kind, but his kind. Don't be troubled or afraid. His peace doesn't remove the storm; it holds you through it.

28

Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

Spiritual Insight

If you loved me, you'd be glad I'm going to the Father, because the Father is greater. His departure is actually a gain — for him and for us.

29

And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

Spiritual Insight

He told them before it happened so they would believe when it did. Again, prediction builds trust. God gives us advance notice so our faith can grow.

30

Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

Spiritual Insight

The prince of this world is coming, but he has no hold on Jesus. Evil approaches, but finds nothing in Christ to grab onto. Purity is untouchable.

31

But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

Spiritual Insight

He does exactly what the Father commands, so the world will know he loves the Father. Obedience is love made visible. Then he says, "Come, let's go."
