Proverbs 第 25

KJV — King James Version · 28

1

These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

Spiritual Insight

These are more proverbs of Solomon, copied by Hezekiah's men. Wisdom is worth preserving and passing down through generations.

2

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

Spiritual Insight

It is God's glory to conceal a matter and the king's glory to search it out. Mystery invites exploration, and the pursuit of truth is noble.

3

The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

Spiritual Insight

As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable. Human leadership carries complexities beyond what we can see.

4

Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.

Spiritual Insight

Remove the dross from the silver and a silversmith can create something beautiful. Purification reveals the true potential within.

5

Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

Spiritual Insight

Remove the wicked from the king's presence and his throne will be established through righteousness. Good leadership requires the courage to make hard personnel decisions.

6

Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:

Spiritual Insight

Don't claim honor in the king's presence or take a seat among the great. Humility opens doors that self-promotion slams shut.

7

For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.

Spiritual Insight

It's better for someone to say 'Come up here' than to be humiliated before a ruler. Let others lift you up rather than pulling yourself up.

8

Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

Spiritual Insight

Don't be hasty to go to court — what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame? Rush into conflict and you may regret the outcome.

9

Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:

Spiritual Insight

Settle matters directly with your neighbor and don't betray another's confidence. Honest, private conversations resolve more than public accusations.

10

Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

Spiritual Insight

Someone who hears may shame you and your reputation will be damaged. Trust, once broken, takes a long time to rebuild.

11

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.

Spiritual Insight

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. The right words at the right time are breathtakingly beautiful.

12

As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

Spiritual Insight

A wise person's rebuke to a listening ear is like gold jewelry — precious and valuable. Correction, when received well, adorns both the giver and the receiver.

13

As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.

Spiritual Insight

Like the cold of snow at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger — refreshing to the spirit of those who send them. Reliability is a gift that brings relief.

14

Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

Spiritual Insight

Like clouds and wind without rain is someone who boasts about gifts they never give. Empty promises leave everyone around you thirsty.

15

By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

Spiritual Insight

Patience can persuade a ruler, and a gentle tongue can break bones. Quiet persistence accomplishes more than loud force.

16

Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

Spiritual Insight

If you find honey, eat just enough — too much and you'll vomit. Even good things become harmful in excess.

17

Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour’s house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.

Spiritual Insight

Don't visit your neighbor too often or they'll grow weary of you and hate you. Even friendships need breathing room.

18

A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

Spiritual Insight

Like a club, sword, or sharp arrow is someone who gives false testimony against a neighbor. Falsehood wounds with lethal precision.

19

Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

Spiritual Insight

Like a broken tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in a time of need. Depend on someone unreliable and you'll be left hobbling.

20

As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.

Spiritual Insight

Like taking off a garment on a cold day or vinegar on a wound is singing songs to a heavy heart. Insensitive cheerfulness deepens another's pain.

21

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

Spiritual Insight

If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if thirsty, give him water to drink. Kindness in the face of hostility is profoundly disarming.

22

For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

Spiritual Insight

You will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you. Radical generosity transforms even enemies.

23

The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

Spiritual Insight

The north wind brings rain, and a backbiting tongue brings angry looks. Gossip always stirs up trouble wherever it goes.

24

It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

Spiritual Insight

Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome spouse. Peace at home is worth more than any square footage.

25

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

Spiritual Insight

Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land. Encouragement from afar can revive you like nothing else.

26

A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.

Spiritual Insight

Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous person who gives way before the wicked. Compromising your integrity pollutes everything downstream.

27

It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

Spiritual Insight

It's not good to eat too much honey, nor is it glorious to seek your own honor. Self-indulgence and self-promotion both leave you empty.

28

He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Spiritual Insight

A person without self-control is like a city breached, without walls. Without inner boundaries, you're defenseless against every temptation.
