John Capítulo 12
KJV — King James Version · 50 versículos
Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
Spiritual Insight
Six days before Passover, Jesus returned to where Lazarus was — the man he'd raised from the dead. He went back to the place of miracle and friendship.
There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
Spiritual Insight
A dinner was thrown in his honor. Martha served, Lazarus sat at the table. After death, there was community again. Life restored means table fellowship restored.
Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Spiritual Insight
Mary poured out expensive perfume on Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with fragrance. Extravagant love leaves a scent that fills every room.
Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him,
Spiritual Insight
Enter Judas — the one who would betray him. Even at a table of love, betrayal was present. Light and shadow often sit side by side.
Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
Spiritual Insight
Three hundred denarii was nearly a year's wages. Judas' objection sounded noble — caring for the poor — but the heart behind it was corrupt.
This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Spiritual Insight
Judas didn't care about the poor; he was a thief. Not every criticism that sounds spiritual comes from a good place.
Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus defends Mary: she was preparing him for burial. What looked like waste was actually worship — prophetic, tender, and perfectly timed.
For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
Spiritual Insight
"The poor you will always have, but you will not always have me." There's a time for everything — including recognizing sacred moments while they last.
Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
Spiritual Insight
People came not just for Jesus but to see Lazarus — a walking miracle. A transformed life draws curiosity and crowds.
But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;
Spiritual Insight
The chief priests wanted to kill Lazarus too. The evidence of Jesus' power was so threatening they wanted to eliminate the proof.
Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
Spiritual Insight
Because of Lazarus, many were believing. One resurrected life was changing everything. Your story might be someone else's turning point.
On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
Spiritual Insight
The next day, the crowd heard Jesus was coming. Excitement was building — something extraordinary was about to happen.
Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Spiritual Insight
Palm branches, shouts of "Hosanna," blessings on the King. They welcomed him with celebration, though they didn't fully understand what kind of king he was.
And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
Spiritual Insight
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it — not a warhorse, but a humble animal. His kingship was different from what anyone expected.
Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.
Spiritual Insight
"Don't be afraid, Daughter Zion — your king comes riding on a donkey's colt." The prophecy was gentle and disarming. His arrival was meant to bring peace, not fear.
These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
Spiritual Insight
The disciples didn't understand at first. Clarity often comes looking backward — after Jesus is glorified, the puzzle pieces finally fit.
The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
Spiritual Insight
The crowd that witnessed Lazarus' resurrection kept testifying. Eyewitnesses make the best advocates — they simply tell what they saw.
For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.
Spiritual Insight
The miracle drew the crowd, and the crowd drew the praise. One act of God rippled outward, touching more lives than anyone could count.
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
Spiritual Insight
The Pharisees said it themselves: "The whole world has gone after him." Sometimes your critics are the first to notice your impact.
And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
Spiritual Insight
Even Greeks came to worship at the feast. The reach of Jesus was expanding beyond Israel — the whole world was starting to pay attention.
The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
Spiritual Insight
"Sir, we would like to see Jesus." It's one of the simplest and most powerful requests in all of scripture. Maybe it should be ours too.
Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
Spiritual Insight
Philip went to Andrew, and together they told Jesus. When seekers come, it often takes a team to connect them to the one they're looking for.
And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus responds to the Greeks' request by saying his hour has come. The seeking of outsiders signals that the time for glorification has arrived.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
Spiritual Insight
A grain of wheat must fall and die to produce much fruit. The principle of the kingdom is counterintuitive: death before harvest, surrender before abundance.
He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
Spiritual Insight
Clinging to your life means losing it; letting go means keeping it for eternity. The paradox of faith is that surrender is the path to abundance.
If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
Spiritual Insight
Serving Jesus means following him — going where he goes, being where he is. And the Father honors those who serve. That's a promise.
Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus was troubled in his soul, yet he didn't ask to escape. "For this purpose I came to this hour." Even in anguish, purpose carried him forward.
Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
Spiritual Insight
"Father, glorify your name." And a voice from heaven responded: "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." God answers prayers for his glory.
The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
Spiritual Insight
Some heard thunder, others heard an angel. The same voice, different interpretations. God speaks, but not everyone hears the same way.
Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
Spiritual Insight
The voice wasn't for Jesus' benefit — it was for the crowd. Sometimes God moves in ways that aren't primarily for us, but we get to witness them anyway.
Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
Spiritual Insight
Now is the judgment of the world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. The cross wasn't defeat — it was the eviction notice for evil.
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
Spiritual Insight
"When I am lifted up, I will draw all people to myself." The cross is magnetic — not through power, but through love that pulls every heart homeward.
This he said, signifying what death he should die.
Spiritual Insight
John notes that Jesus was hinting at the kind of death he would die. The crowd may not have caught it, but the record is clear for us.
The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
Spiritual Insight
The crowd was confused — the law says the Messiah remains forever, so how can he be lifted up? Honest questions are welcome, even when they come from misunderstanding.
Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
Spiritual Insight
"Walk while you have the light." There's urgency in his words — don't waste the opportunity while it's here. Darkness is coming, so move while you can see.
While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
Spiritual Insight
Believe in the light while you have it, and become children of light. Then Jesus departed and hid from them. The invitation has a deadline.
But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:
Spiritual Insight
Despite so many miracles, they still didn't believe. Evidence alone doesn't create faith — something deeper in the heart has to open.
That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
Spiritual Insight
Isaiah's words were fulfilled: "Who has believed our message?" The rejection of Jesus was predicted long ago. Unbelief isn't new — it's the oldest story.
Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
Spiritual Insight
They couldn't believe, Isaiah said. There's a mystery here — human choice and divine sovereignty intertwine in ways we can't fully untangle.
He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
Spiritual Insight
God hardened their hearts and blinded their eyes so they couldn't turn and be healed. It's a sobering thought — there comes a point where resistance becomes permanent.
These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
Spiritual Insight
Isaiah saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. The Old Testament prophets weren't just predicting events — they were glimpsing the Son of God himself.
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
Spiritual Insight
Many leaders believed secretly but wouldn't confess it publicly because they feared being expelled. Secret faith is real, but it's not free — it costs you courage.
For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
Spiritual Insight
They loved human praise more than God's praise. It's an uncomfortable mirror — how often do we choose approval over authenticity?
Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
Spiritual Insight
Believing in Jesus is believing in the one who sent him. Faith isn't just about a person — it's about connecting with the God behind the person.
And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
Spiritual Insight
Seeing Jesus is seeing the Father. He is the visible image of the invisible God — if you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.
I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus came as light into the world so no one would have to stay in darkness. The light is here — the question is whether we'll walk in it.
And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Spiritual Insight
He didn't come to judge but to save. That's the mission statement — rescue, not condemnation. Judgment exists, but it wasn't the purpose of his coming.
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
Spiritual Insight
Rejecting Jesus doesn't escape judgment — it simply defers it. His words will be the standard on the last day. What we do with his message matters eternally.
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus didn't speak on his own authority — the Father commanded what he should say. Every word from Jesus carries the weight of divine instruction.
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
Spiritual Insight
His commandment is eternal life. Jesus spoke exactly what the Father told him — nothing added, nothing subtracted. That's perfect faithfulness.
