Romans Chapter 14
KJV — King James Version · 23 verses
Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
Spiritual Insight
Welcome the person whose faith is fragile without turning it into a debate. Not every difference needs an argument — some just need acceptance.
For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
Spiritual Insight
Some eat everything, others only vegetables. The detail is almost comical, but the principle is serious: don't let dietary differences divide the body.
Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
Spiritual Insight
Don't despise the cautious person, and don't judge the free one. God has accepted them both — which means you can too.
Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
Spiritual Insight
Who are you to judge someone else's servant? They answer to their own master, not to you. And their Master is able to hold them up.
One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
Spiritual Insight
Some observe special days, some treat every day the same. The key is being fully convinced in your own mind, not forcing your conviction on others.
He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
Spiritual Insight
Whatever you do — observe or don't observe, eat or don't eat — do it with thanksgiving to God. Gratitude sanctifies the choice.
For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
Spiritual Insight
None of us lives or dies to ourselves alone. We're connected — to God and to each other — in ways we rarely fully appreciate.
For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.
Spiritual Insight
Whether living or dying, we belong to the Lord. That's the ultimate security — not that nothing bad will happen, but that nothing can separate us from Him.
For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus died and rose again to be Lord of both the living and the dead. His authority spans every state of existence — nothing is outside His dominion.
But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
Spiritual Insight
Why judge your brother? Why look down on them? We'll all stand before the same judgment seat — that should make us humble, not haughty.
For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
Spiritual Insight
Every knee will bow, every tongue will confess. Not might bow — will bow. The question isn't whether you'll acknowledge God, but when.
So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
Spiritual Insight
Each person will give an account of themselves to God. Not of their neighbor, not of their pastor — of themselves. That's intensely personal.
Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.
Spiritual Insight
Stop judging each other and instead focus on not being a stumbling block. Your energy is better spent protecting others than evaluating them.
I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
Spiritual Insight
Nothing is unclean in itself — but if someone thinks it is, for them it is. Conviction is real even when it's not universal. Respect it.
But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.
Spiritual Insight
If your freedom wounds someone's conscience, you're not walking in love. Don't destroy someone Christ died for just to prove a point about liberty.
Let not then your good be evil spoken of:
Spiritual Insight
Don't let your good be spoken of as evil. Your freedom is good, but using it carelessly gives others reason to criticize what should be celebrated.
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
Spiritual Insight
The kingdom isn't about food and drink — it's about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Keep your eyes on what actually matters.
For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
Spiritual Insight
Serving Christ in these things — righteousness, peace, joy — is what makes you acceptable to God and respected by people. Keep it simple.
Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
Spiritual Insight
Pursue what makes for peace and mutual building up. Don't just avoid conflict — actively create harmony and strengthen each other.
For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
Spiritual Insight
Don't destroy God's work over food. Everything is clean, but eating with a guilty conscience is harmful. Be wise about when to exercise your rights.
It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.
Spiritual Insight
Better to skip meat and wine than to cause someone else to stumble. Love limits its own liberty for the sake of another's conscience.
Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
Spiritual Insight
Keep your convictions between you and God. You're blessed if you don't condemn yourself over what you allow. Faith and a clear conscience are a beautiful combination.
And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Spiritual Insight
Whatever is not from faith is sin. That's the bottom line — not just actions, but the heart behind them. If you can't do it in faith, don't do it.
