Revelation Chapter 11
KJV — King James Version · 19 verses
And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
Spiritual Insight
A measuring rod to measure the temple, the altar, and the worshippers — God is taking inventory of what's truly His. What He measures, He values; what He values, He protects.
But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
Spiritual Insight
The outer court is excluded and given to the Gentiles for 42 months — not everything is measured; some areas are temporarily handed over. God knows the difference between what's holy and what's compromised.
And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
Spiritual Insight
Two witnesses will prophesy for 1,260 days in sackcloth — God never leaves Himself without testimony. Even in the darkest chapters, He raises voices wrapped in humility but burning with truth.
These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
Spiritual Insight
They are the two olive trees and lampstands standing before the Lord — imagery of constant supply and constant light. Witnesses don't burn out because their oil comes directly from God.
And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
Spiritual Insight
Fire devours anyone who tries to harm them — God defends His witnesses fiercely. When you speak His truth, you carry His protection, and no weapon formed against you will ultimately prosper.
These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
Spiritual Insight
Power to shut the sky, turn water to blood, and strike with plagues — the witnesses carry Moses-and-Elijah-level authority. God entrusts real power to those who stand before Him in faithfulness.
And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
Spiritual Insight
When they finish their testimony, the beast makes war and kills them — even God's protected ones have an appointed end. Faithfulness doesn't mean invulnerability; it means completing the mission.
And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
Spiritual Insight
Their bodies lie in the street of the great city called Sodom and Egypt — a place of spiritual corruption. The world's hostility to God's truth hasn't changed; it just finds new addresses.
And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
Spiritual Insight
People from every nation gaze at their bodies for three and a half days, refusing burial — public mockery as global entertainment. The world loves to celebrate the silencing of truth-tellers.
And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
Spiritual Insight
The earth dwellers celebrate and exchange gifts because the prophets who tormented them are dead — conviction feels like torment to the guilty. The world's party is always premature.
And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
Spiritual Insight
After three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered them and they stood up — resurrection in plain sight. God has the last word, and it's always 'rise.'
And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
Spiritual Insight
A loud voice called 'Come up here' and they ascended in a cloud while their enemies watched — vindication in real time. Those who mocked will see what God really thinks of His witnesses.
And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.
Spiritual Insight
A great earthquake destroyed a tenth of the city, killing seven thousand, and the survivors gave glory to God — even terror can produce worship. Sometimes it takes a shaking to open closed mouths in praise.
The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.
Spiritual Insight
The second woe has passed; the third is coming quickly — there's no pause button on God's timeline. Each woe builds on the last, and urgency should build in our hearts too.
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
Spiritual Insight
The seventh trumpet sounds and loud voices declare: the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord — the greatest transfer of power in all of history. Every earthly throne bows to the eternal one.
And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,
Spiritual Insight
The twenty-four elders fall on their faces and worship — again, heaven responds to God's victory with immediate, physical worship. True awe always drops you to your knees.
Saying, We give thee thanks, O LORD God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.
Spiritual Insight
Thank you, Lord God Almighty, for taking your great power and beginning to reign — gratitude for God's reign, not fear. When God takes the throne, it's good news for those who love Him.
And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
Spiritual Insight
The nations were angry, but your wrath came — the time to judge the dead, reward the saints, and destroy the destroyers. Justice, reward, and restoration all arrive in one magnificent moment.
And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
Spiritual Insight
God's temple opened, the ark of His covenant visible, accompanied by lightning, thunder, earthquake, and hail — God's presence is both beautiful and terrifying. The ark means mercy; the storm means power. Both are Him.
