Proverbs Chapter 8

KJV — King James Version · 36 verses

1

Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom is not silent — she cries out, raising her voice for all to hear. If you're not hearing her, it's not because she's quiet; it's because there's too much noise in the way.

2

She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.

Spiritual Insight

She stands at the highest places, where roads meet and decisions are made. Wisdom positions herself exactly where you need her most — at the crossroads of your life.

3

She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.

Spiritual Insight

At the gates, at the city entrance — wisdom calls where people gather and pass through. She's not hiding in temples or libraries; she's in the everyday flow of human traffic.

4

Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.

Spiritual Insight

She calls to all people — not just the educated, the religious, or the privileged. Wisdom's invitation is universal; her arms are open to anyone willing to listen.

5

O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

Spiritual Insight

Even the simple and foolish are invited to learn — wisdom doesn't require prerequisites. You don't need to be smart to start; you just need to be willing.

6

Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom speaks of noble things — her words are worth listening to because they carry weight. In a world full of trivial chatter, her voice speaks of what truly matters.

7

For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

Spiritual Insight

My mouth speaks truth — wisdom is fundamentally honest. She doesn't spin, manipulate, or exaggerate. What you hear from her is exactly what is.

8

All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.

Spiritual Insight

All her words are righteous — nothing crooked or twisted in them. In a world of half-truths and spin, wisdom offers the rare gift of completely straight talk.

9

They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.

Spiritual Insight

They're clear to those who understand, right to those who find knowledge — wisdom rewards the seeker with clarity. The more you pursue her, the sharper your vision becomes.

10

Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.

Spiritual Insight

Choose my instruction over silver, knowledge over gold — that's a radical reordering of values. Wisdom asks you to want understanding more than wealth.

11

For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom is better than rubies, and nothing you can desire compares with her — this isn't exaggeration. Every good thing you've ever wanted is already contained within her.

12

I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom lives with prudence and finds out knowledge — she's not just theory but practical living. She pairs insight with action, understanding with everyday decisions.

13

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Spiritual Insight

To fear the Lord is to hate evil — and that includes pride, arrogance, and perversity. True reverence for God isn't just about worship; it's about rejecting what He rejects.

14

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

Spiritual Insight

Counsel, sound wisdom, understanding, and strength — wisdom brings all of these together. She doesn't just help you think; she helps you act with power and purpose.

15

By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.

Spiritual Insight

By wisdom, kings reign and princes decree justice — even the most powerful need her. Good governance and fair leadership flow directly from godly understanding.

16

By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.

Spiritual Insight

Rulers and nobles govern by wisdom — she is the hidden engine behind every just society. When leaders are wise, the people flourish; when they're not, everyone suffers.

17

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

Spiritual Insight

I love those who love me, and those who seek me early will find me — wisdom responds to your desire. She's not playing hard to get; she's waiting to be earnestly pursued.

18

Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.

Spiritual Insight

With wisdom come enduring riches and righteousness — not fleeting wealth but lasting substance. What she offers doesn't depreciate; it compounds over a lifetime.

19

My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.

Spiritual Insight

My fruit is better than fine gold, my harvest better than choice silver — wisdom's returns outshine every earthly investment. She's the best deal you'll ever be offered.

20

I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom leads in the way of righteousness, right in the middle of the path of justice. She doesn't guide you to the edges; she keeps you centered on what's right.

21

That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom wants to fill your treasuries — she's not trying to take from you but to give to you abundantly. Her generosity is lavish toward those who love her.

22

The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom was with God from the very beginning — before anything was created. When you seek wisdom, you're connecting with something older than the universe itself.

23

I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

Spiritual Insight

Established from eternity, before the world began — wisdom isn't a human invention. She's a divine reality woven into the fabric of creation from day one.

24

When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.

Spiritual Insight

Before there were oceans or springs, wisdom already existed. She predates every natural wonder — and yet she's available to you right now, right where you are.

25

Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

Spiritual Insight

Before the mountains were set in place, wisdom was there. The most permanent things you can see are actually younger than the wisdom God offers you.

26

While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.

Spiritual Insight

Before God made the earth, the fields, or even the dust — wisdom was already present. She witnessed the entire creative process from the very first moment.

27

When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:

Spiritual Insight

When God stretched out the heavens and set the horizon on the deep, wisdom was right there beside Him. She's not distant from creation — she's intimately involved in it.

28

When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:

Spiritual Insight

When God established the clouds and secured the springs of the deep, wisdom was present. Every natural system you rely on was set up with her help.

29

When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

Spiritual Insight

When God set boundaries for the sea and laid the earth's foundation, wisdom was there. Even the boundaries that keep the ocean in place reflect her ordering hand.

30

Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom was beside God like a master worker, daily His delight — not a servant but a beloved companion. God enjoyed creating the world with wisdom by His side.

31

Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

Spiritual Insight

Wisdom rejoiced in the inhabited world and delighted in the children of men — she loves people. From the very beginning, wisdom has been drawn to the human story.

32

Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

Spiritual Insight

Now then, listen to me — blessed are those who keep my ways. After all that description of wisdom's glory, the application is simple: listen and follow.

33

Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

Spiritual Insight

Hear instruction and be wise, and don't refuse it — the path is straightforward but not always easy. Receiving correction is the toll you pay on the road to becoming wise.

34

Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

Spiritual Insight

Blessed is the person who listens to wisdom, watching daily at her doors. There's a daily rhythm to seeking God — it's not a one-time visit but a lifelong practice.

35

For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

Spiritual Insight

Whoever finds wisdom finds life and obtains favor from the Lord — she's the gateway to everything good. Finding her isn't just about being smart; it's about truly living.

36

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Spiritual Insight

But whoever sins against wisdom wrongs their own soul — and all who hate her love death. Rejecting wisdom isn't neutral; it's actively self-destructive.
