Proverbs Chapter 31
KJV — King James Version · 31 verses
The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
Spiritual Insight
These are the words of King Lemuel — the wisdom his mother taught him. Some of the best instruction comes from a mother who loves you enough to speak truth.
What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?
Spiritual Insight
O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows — a mother's instruction carries the weight of deep love and sacred promise.
Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
Spiritual Insight
Don't spend your strength on women or your vigor on those who ruin kings. Some pleasures drain the very energy you need for your purpose.
It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
Spiritual Insight
It's not for kings to drink wine or rulers to crave beer. Leadership requires a clear head — intoxication compromises judgment when it matters most.
Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
Spiritual Insight
Lest they drink and forget what's been decreed and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. A leader's impairment leaves the vulnerable unprotected.
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
Spiritual Insight
Let beer be for those who are perishing and wine for those in anguish. There may be a place for relief in suffering, but not for those who bear responsibility.
Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
Spiritual Insight
Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. Temporary relief has its place, but it's not a strategy for leadership.
Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
Spiritual Insight
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Advocacy is not optional for those who have a voice — it's a sacred obligation.
Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
Spiritual Insight
Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Using your influence for justice is the highest use of power.
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
Spiritual Insight
A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Character in a partner is more precious than any jewel.
The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
Spiritual Insight
Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. Trust built through faithful living creates a foundation of security.
She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
Spiritual Insight
She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. Consistent faithfulness is more valuable than occasional grand gestures.
She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
Spiritual Insight
She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. Meaningful work done with enthusiasm is a form of worship.
She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
Spiritual Insight
She is like the merchant ships, bringing food from afar. A wise provider explores widely and brings nourishment from unexpected places.
She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
Spiritual Insight
She gets up while it's still dark and provides food for her family. Diligence starts before the world demands it — preparation is an act of love.
She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
Spiritual Insight
She considers a field and buys it; from her earnings she plants a vineyard. Wise investment requires both careful thought and courageous action.
She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
Spiritual Insight
She girds herself with strength and shows that her arms are strong. Strength — both physical and spiritual — is cultivated through faithful work.
She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
Spiritual Insight
She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp doesn't go out at night. Vigilance and diligence create a light that others can see.
She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
Spiritual Insight
She holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. Skill is developed through consistent, hands-on practice.
She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
Spiritual Insight
She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. Generosity flows naturally from a life that has been blessed through diligence.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
Spiritual Insight
When it snows, she has no fear for her household — they're all clothed in scarlet. Preparation turns potential crisis into a non-event.
She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
Spiritual Insight
She makes coverings for her bed and is clothed in fine linen and purple. Creating beauty in your home is an expression of care, not vanity.
Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
Spiritual Insight
Her husband is respected at the city gate where he takes his seat among the elders. A person's character at home enhances or diminishes their reputation in public.
She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
Spiritual Insight
She makes linen garments and sells them and supplies belts to the merchants. Her industry blesses not only her family but the wider community.
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
Spiritual Insight
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. True confidence comes from character, not circumstance.
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
Spiritual Insight
She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue. Words become powerful when backed by a life of integrity.
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Spiritual Insight
She watches over the affairs of her household and doesn't eat the bread of idleness. Attentive stewardship is the opposite of laziness.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Spiritual Insight
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also praises her. A life well-lived earns the gratitude of those closest to you.
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Spiritual Insight
Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Excellence isn't competition — it's the joyful recognition of someone's unique contribution.
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Spiritual Insight
Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Lasting worth comes from reverence, not appearance.
Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
Spiritual Insight
Give her the reward she has earned and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Honor those who faithfully serve — their labor deserves public recognition.
