Proverbs Chapter 27
KJV — King James Version · 27 verses
Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
Spiritual Insight
Don't boast about tomorrow — you don't know what a day may bring. Humility about the future keeps you grounded in the present.
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
Spiritual Insight
Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth — a stranger, not your own lips. Authentic recognition comes from outside, not from within.
A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.
Spiritual Insight
A stone is heavy and sand is weighty, but the resentment of a fool is heavier than both. Nothing weighs you down like carrying someone else's foolishness.
Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
Spiritual Insight
Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy? Envy consumes from within like nothing else.
Open rebuke is better than secret love.
Spiritual Insight
Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Honest correction shows more care than silent affection.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
Spiritual Insight
Wounds from a friend are trustworthy, but an enemy's kisses are profuse. Painful honesty from someone who loves you is worth more than flattery from someone who doesn't.
The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
Spiritual Insight
One who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even bitter things taste sweet. Your circumstances shape what you find satisfying.
As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.
Spiritual Insight
Like a bird fleeing its nest is someone who wanders from home. There's something destabilizing about being disconnected from your roots.
Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.
Spiritual Insight
Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the sweetness of a friend is better than self-counsel. A good friend's advice carries a fragrance that lingers.
Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
Spiritual Insight
Don't forsake your friend or your father's friend — don't go to a relative's house when disaster strikes. A nearby friend is worth more than a distant brother.
My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.
Spiritual Insight
Be wise, my child, and bring joy to my heart, so I can answer anyone who taunts me. Your conduct reflects on those who mentored you.
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
Spiritual Insight
The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. Paying attention to warning signs is an act of self-care.
Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
Spiritual Insight
Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it as pledge against a neighbor. Don't be naively generous with what you can't afford to lose.
He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.
Spiritual Insight
If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse. Even good things said at the wrong time or in the wrong way backfire.
A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.
Spiritual Insight
A quarrelsome wife is like a dripping faucet — you can't stop it, and you can't get away from it. Constant conflict wears down even the strongest person.
Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.
Spiritual Insight
restraining her is like grasping oil with the right hand. Some conflicts can't be managed — they must be transformed at a deeper level.
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Spiritual Insight
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. We grow stronger through meaningful relationships that challenge us.
Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.
Spiritual Insight
Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and whoever looks after their master will be honored. Faithful care brings its own reward.
As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.
Spiritual Insight
As water reflects the face, so the heart reflects the person. Your inner life eventually shows on the outside.
Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
Spiritual Insight
Death and destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes. The appetite for more is endless unless gratitude intervenes.
As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.
Spiritual Insight
The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but people are tested by their praise. How you handle approval reveals your true character.
Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.
Spiritual Insight
Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle, their folly will not depart from them. Some lessons can't be forced — they require a willing heart.
Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.
Spiritual Insight
Be sure you know the condition of your flocks and pay attention to your herds. Good stewardship requires regular attention to what you've been given.
For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?
Spiritual Insight
Riches don't last forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations. Material security is temporary — invest in what endures.
The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.
Spiritual Insight
When the hay is removed and new growth appears, the grass from the hills is gathered in. Cycles of harvest and renewal remind us that provision follows faithful work.
The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.
Spiritual Insight
The lambs will provide your clothing and the goats the price of a field. What you tend faithfully will provide for you in return.
And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.
Spiritual Insight
You'll have plenty of goat's milk to feed you and your family and to nourish your servant girls. Diligent care creates abundance for everyone under your responsibility.
