Proverbs Chapter 18

KJV — King James Version · 24 verses

1

Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.

Spiritual Insight

Sometimes a person separates themselves to earnestly seek wisdom. There's value in stepping away from the noise to pursue understanding with focused intention.

2

A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.

Spiritual Insight

A fool isn't interested in learning — they just want to air their own opinions. True understanding begins with the willingness to listen.

3

When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.

Spiritual Insight

When wickedness enters a space, contempt and shame follow close behind. Sin never travels alone — it always brings company we don't want.

4

The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.

Spiritual Insight

A person's words can be as deep and refreshing as flowing water. When wisdom fills someone, their speech becomes a life-giving stream to everyone around them.

5

It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

Spiritual Insight

Showing favoritism to the wicked while overthrowing the righteous corrupts the very foundation of justice. Every decision of fairness matters to God.

6

A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.

Spiritual Insight

A fool's mouth constantly gets them into trouble, almost as if they're asking for a beating. Careless words carry real consequences.

7

A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

Spiritual Insight

What a fool says can literally destroy them — their own words become a trap. The tongue can be either a tool or a snare.

8

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Spiritual Insight

Gossip doesn't just wound on the surface — it penetrates deep into a person's innermost being. The damage of careless words goes further than we imagine.

9

He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.

Spiritual Insight

Laziness at work is essentially partnership with destruction. When we neglect our responsibilities, we're not just wasting time — we're wasting opportunity.

10

The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

Spiritual Insight

The name of the Lord is a safe place to run to — like a strong tower that cannot be shaken. When everything feels uncertain, He is our refuge.

11

The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.

Spiritual Insight

Wealth can feel like a fortress, but it's only a false sense of security. Riches can protect in some ways, but they can never shield the soul.

12

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.

Spiritual Insight

Humility comes before honor, just as pride comes before a fall. The path upward always begins by bowing low.

13

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

Spiritual Insight

Answering before fully listening is both foolish and shameful. Patience to hear someone out is the first step toward true understanding.

14

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

Spiritual Insight

The human spirit is remarkably resilient — it can carry us through physical illness. But a broken spirit? That's a weight almost impossible to bear alone.

15

The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

Spiritual Insight

The wise person is always seeking and acquiring knowledge — it's an active, lifelong pursuit. Learning doesn't stop when school ends.

16

A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.

Spiritual Insight

A generous gift can open doors and create opportunities to stand before important people. Generosity has a way of making room where there seemed to be none.

17

He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.

Spiritual Insight

The first person to tell their side always sounds right — until the other side is heard. Truth emerges when we take time to listen to all perspectives.

18

The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.

Spiritual Insight

Casting lots was a way to settle disputes and let God decide the outcome. Sometimes the wisest path is to surrender our need to control and trust God's direction.

19

A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.

Spiritual Insight

An offended brother is harder to win back than conquering a fortified city. Broken trust creates walls that take great effort to tear down.

20

A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.

Spiritual Insight

Our words feed us — for better or worse. What comes out of our mouth produces the harvest we'll eventually eat from.

21

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Spiritual Insight

Our words carry enormous power — they can build up or tear down, give life or bring death. We must choose them carefully because we'll live with their fruit.

22

Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.

Spiritual Insight

Finding a good spouse is described as finding something wonderful and receiving favor from the Lord. Marriage, at its best, is a divine gift.

23

The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.

Spiritual Insight

The poor must plead humbly, while the rich often answer harshly. Wealth can distort how we treat others, and this verse calls out that injustice plainly.

24

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Spiritual Insight

Friendship requires effort — to have friends, we must be friendly. And thankfully, there are some bonds that run deeper than even family ties.
