Holy Bible/John/Chapter 7

John Chapter 7

KJV — King James Version · 53 verses

1

After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

Spiritual Insight

Sometimes the wisest path is to step back from danger, not because of fear, but because the timing isn't right. Jesus moved thoughtfully, and that's something we can learn from.

2

Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.

Spiritual Insight

The Feast of Tabernacles was a joyful celebration of harvest and God's provision. Life has its seasons of celebration—embrace them fully when they come.

3

His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

Spiritual Insight

Even Jesus' own family pushed him to prove himself publicly. Sometimes the people closest to us don't quite understand what we're really about.

4

For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

Spiritual Insight

There's a pressure to perform openly that can cloud our judgment. Not everything meaningful needs an audience.

5

For neither did his brethren believe in him.

Spiritual Insight

The ache of not being believed by your own family is real. Jesus knew that loneliness too, and it didn't stop him.

6

Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus had a deep sense of timing—he wasn't rushed by others' expectations. There's freedom in knowing your own season.

7

The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

Spiritual Insight

Speaking truth about what's wrong will make you unpopular. Jesus accepted that cost without compromising.

8

Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come.

Spiritual Insight

There's wisdom in not rushing. Jesus wasn't avoiding the feast—he was waiting for the right moment.

9

When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

Spiritual Insight

After saying his piece, Jesus simply stayed where he was. Sometimes the most powerful thing is quiet patience.

10

But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus went to the feast, but on his own terms—not for show, but with purpose. There's a difference between showing up and performing.

11

Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

Spiritual Insight

The people were looking for Jesus, but some with curiosity and others with hostile intent. Being sought after isn't always flattering.

12

And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

Spiritual Insight

Public opinion about Jesus was deeply divided. Some saw goodness, others saw deception. The same person can evoke wildly different reactions.

13

Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

Spiritual Insight

Fear silenced honest conversation about Jesus. It's sad when people can't speak freely about what they truly think.

14

Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus didn't hide forever—he showed up at the right time and began teaching. Courage isn't the absence of fear; it's showing up anyway.

15

And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

Spiritual Insight

People were amazed by Jesus' wisdom despite his lack of formal education. True wisdom doesn't always come with credentials.

16

Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus pointed beyond himself—to the One who sent him. Real authority comes from alignment with a purpose greater than yourself.

17

If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

Spiritual Insight

Here's a beautiful promise: if you're willing to do God's will, you'll recognize whether the teaching is genuine. Sincerity opens the door to understanding.

18

He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

Spiritual Insight

Seeking your own glory vs. seeking God's glory—that's the litmus test of a true teacher. Self-promotion and truth-telling rarely coexist.

19

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

Spiritual Insight

Jesus names the uncomfortable truth: the law they prized so highly was already broken in their hearts. Religious pride can blind us to our own failings.

20

The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

Spiritual Insight

The crowd's denial is almost comical—they genuinely didn't see the conspiracy happening around them. Sometimes we're the last to see what's obvious.

21

Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus highlights the irony: one healing and everyone is up in arms. Sometimes doing good makes people the most uncomfortable.

22

Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus meets them on their own terms, using their own traditions. He wasn't trying to destroy the law—he was showing its deeper purpose.

23

If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

Spiritual Insight

If circumcision was allowed on the Sabbath to preserve one part of the body, how much more should making a whole person well be celebrated? Logic and compassion should go hand in hand.

24

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

Spiritual Insight

Don't judge by appearances—what a simple and yet profoundly difficult instruction. We're all prone to snap judgments that miss the real story.

25

Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

Spiritual Insight

The people of Jerusalem were starting to connect the dots. When someone speaks with such courage in the face of real danger, it makes you wonder.

26

But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

Spiritual Insight

Even the authorities' silence was telling. When powerful people don't silence a bold voice, maybe they know something they're not saying.

27

Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

Spiritual Insight

They thought they had Jesus figured out—hometown, family, background. But God rarely fits neatly into our expectations.

28

Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus cried out in the temple—not whispered, not hinted—cried out. Some truths are worth raising your voice for.

29

But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus speaks with intimate knowledge of the Father. This isn't theology from a textbook—it's the language of someone who truly knows God.

30

Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

Spiritual Insight

They wanted to seize him but couldn't. There's something about divine timing that protects you until your work is done.

31

And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

Spiritual Insight

Faith often begins with a simple question: could anyone do more than this? Sometimes the evidence is right in front of us.

32

The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

Spiritual Insight

The religious leaders felt their control slipping. When people start thinking for themselves, those in power get nervous.

33

Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus speaks about leaving with a tenderness that's almost heartbreaking. He knows the clock is ticking, and he wants them to understand.

34

Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

Spiritual Insight

You'll look for me but won't find me—these words carry a weight of lost opportunity. There's a window for seeking, and it doesn't stay open forever.

35

Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

Spiritual Insight

Their confusion about where Jesus might go reveals how little they understood his mission. Sometimes we ask the wrong questions because we're stuck in the wrong framework.

36

What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

Spiritual Insight

They repeated his words back as a puzzle to solve, missing the urgency entirely. It's possible to hear everything and understand nothing.

37

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

Spiritual Insight

On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus offers an open invitation: if you're thirsty, come and drink. That invitation still stands today.

38

He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Spiritual Insight

Rivers of living water flowing from within—what a vivid picture of a life transformed by faith. Faith isn't just belief; it becomes a spring inside you.

39

(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Spiritual Insight

John pauses to explain: this living water is the Holy Spirit, given after Jesus' glorification. The gift was coming, even if they couldn't see it yet.

40

Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.

Spiritual Insight

The crowd starts to piece it together—could this be the Prophet they'd been waiting for? When truth speaks, something deep inside recognizes it.

41

Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

Spiritual Insight

Some said 'This is the Christ,' while others immediately raised objections. Faith and doubt often live side by side in the same moment.

42

Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

Spiritual Insight

They knew the Scriptures about the Messiah coming from Bethlehem and David's line. Knowledge of Scripture can help or hinder—it depends on the heart.

43

So there was a division among the people because of him.

Spiritual Insight

Division because of Jesus isn't new—it was happening right there in the temple courts. He has a way of revealing where people truly stand.

44

And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

Spiritual Insight

Again, no one could lay a hand on him. There's a protection that comes from walking in step with God's purpose.

45

Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

Spiritual Insight

The officers came back empty-handed, and the leaders wanted answers. When God's presence is undeniable, even the enforcers are at a loss.

46

The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

Spiritual Insight

What a testimony from the temple guards: 'Never has anyone spoken like this man.' Even hardened officials couldn't ignore the weight of his words.

47

Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

Spiritual Insight

The Pharisees' response is dismissive and defensive. When you've made up your mind, evidence doesn't matter anymore.

48

Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

Spiritual Insight

They appeal to authority—none of the important people believe. But truth has never been decided by a popularity contest among the elite.

49

But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

Spiritual Insight

Calling the common people cursed because they don't share your theological precision—that's spiritual elitism at its worst.

50

Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)

Spiritual Insight

Nicodemus, who came to Jesus by night, finally speaks up. It takes courage to be the lone voice of reason in a hostile crowd.

51

Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

Spiritual Insight

Nicodemus asks a simple but devastating question: doesn't our own law require hearing someone before judging them? Fairness isn't too much to ask.

52

They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

Spiritual Insight

Their response to Nicodemus is pure ridicule—'Are you from Galilee too?' When you can't answer the argument, attack the person.

53

And every man went unto his own house.

Spiritual Insight

And with that, everyone went home. The conversation ended unresolved, the division unhealed. Some questions are too important to walk away from.
