John Chapter 2
KJV — King James Version · 25 verses
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
Spiritual Insight
A wedding on the third day—Jesus was there, and so was His mother. It matters that Jesus' first recorded miracle happened at a celebration. He cares about our joy.
And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus and His disciples were invited guests, not the hosts. He didn't force His way in—He came because He was wanted. He still responds to invitation.
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
Spiritual Insight
The wine ran out, and Mary went straight to Jesus with the problem. She didn't have a solution, but she knew who to talk to. That's a pretty good approach to most of life's troubles.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus' response sounds almost dismissive—what does this have to do with me? My time hasn't come yet. But Mary wasn't deterred, and Jesus wasn't really saying no.
His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
Spiritual Insight
Mary's instructions to the servants are some of the best advice in Scripture: whatever He tells you, do it. Simple, direct, and surprisingly effective every time.
And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
Spiritual Insight
Six stone water jars, meant for purification rituals, were about to be repurposed for something far better. God loves taking what was meant for rules and filling it with celebration.
Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
Spiritual Insight
Jesus told them to fill the jars to the brim—not halfway, not mostly full, but completely. When Jesus asks for something, He doesn't do partial. Give Him everything.
And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
Spiritual Insight
Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. Jesus didn't make a big show of it—He simply asked them to trust and carry what He had provided.
When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
Spiritual Insight
The master of the feast tasted water that had become wine, and had no idea where it came from. But the servants knew. Sometimes you're the only one who sees the miracle up close.
And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
Spiritual Insight
Everyone serves the good wine first and saves the cheap stuff for later. But Jesus saved the best for now. His provision is always better than what we expected.
This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
Spiritual Insight
This was the first of His signs, and it revealed His glory. The disciples saw and believed. Sometimes faith grows not from arguments but from witnessing who Jesus really is.
After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.
Spiritual Insight
After the wedding, Jesus went down to Capernaum with His family and disciples. They stayed a few days. Even Jesus needed downtime with the people closest to Him.
And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,
Spiritual Insight
Passover was approaching, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He wasn't avoiding the center of religious power—He was walking straight toward it, with purpose.
And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
Spiritual Insight
What He found in the temple was a marketplace—animals, money changers, commerce everywhere. The place meant for prayer had become a place for profit.
And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;
Spiritual Insight
Jesus made a whip and drove them all out—not just the people, but the animals too. He overturned the tables and scattered the money. Righteous anger has its place.
And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.
Spiritual Insight
Get these out of here. Stop making my Father's house a marketplace. Jesus wasn't angry about business—He was angry about what was being done to God's house.
And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
Spiritual Insight
The disciples remembered the Scripture: zeal for your house will consume me. Sometimes we don't understand Jesus' actions in the moment, but later it all clicks.
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
Spiritual Insight
The religious leaders demanded a sign to justify His actions. It's ironic—they were looking at the sign and still asking for one.
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
Spiritual Insight
Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. They thought He meant the building, but He was talking about Himself. The greatest sign was still to come.
Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
Spiritual Insight
Forty-six years of construction, and you'll raise it in three days? They calculated the impossibility but missed the miracle. Numbers can blind us to what God is actually saying.
But he spake of the temple of his body.
Spiritual Insight
But He was talking about the temple of His body. Jesus Himself would become the new meeting place between God and humanity—no building required.
When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
Spiritual Insight
After the resurrection, the disciples remembered His words—and they believed. Sometimes understanding comes long after the words were spoken, in the light of experience.
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.
Spiritual Insight
Many believed because of the signs He did. But belief based on spectacle alone is fragile—Jesus knew that better than anyone.
But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
Spiritual Insight
Jesus didn't entrust Himself to the crowds, because He knew what was in people. He wasn't cynical—just realistic. Genuine trust has to be built on more than excitement.
And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.
Spiritual Insight
He didn't need anyone to tell Him about human nature—He already knew. Jesus sees past the surface, past the applause, straight into the heart. And He loves us anyway.
