Holy Bible/Joel/Chapter 3

Joel Chapter 3

KJV — King James Version · 21 verses

1

For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,

Spiritual Insight

In those days, God will restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem. After judgment comes restoration. God's story always moves toward redemption — He disciplines, but He also brings His people back home.

2

I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

Spiritual Insight

God will gather all nations into the valley of Jehoshaphat and put them on trial for how they treated His people. God sees every injustice done to His children, and He will hold the nations accountable.

3

And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

Spiritual Insight

They cast lots for God's people and traded children for prostitutes and wine. The dehumanization is staggering — treating human beings as commodities. God takes this personally because every person bears His image.

4

Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head;

Spiritual Insight

Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia — God asks what they have against Him. If they try to repay God, He will swiftly return it on their own heads. You can't fight against God and win. Opposing God's people is ultimately opposing God Himself.

5

Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:

Spiritual Insight

They took God's silver and gold and carried His treasures into their temples. They didn't just attack people — they plundered what belonged to God. Taking what is sacred and treating it as ordinary provokes God's jealous love.

6

The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.

Spiritual Insight

The people of Judah and Jerusalem were sold to the Greeks, far from their homeland. Being separated from your home and community is a deep wound. God sees the displaced and the scattered, and He promises to bring them back.

7

Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head:

Spiritual Insight

God will raise them up from where they were sold and return the recompense on their enemies' own heads. God's justice is precise — He doesn't just punish in general; He specifically addresses what was done wrong.

8

And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: for the LORD hath spoken it.

Spiritual Insight

God will sell the sons and daughters of these oppressors to the people of Judah. The tables are turned completely. This isn't about revenge for its own sake — it's about God establishing justice where there was exploitation.

9

Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:

Spiritual Insight

Prepare for war, wake up the mighty men — the nations are told to get ready. God is so confident in His justice that He invites the opposition to bring their best. It's like saying, 'Do your worst — I will still prevail.'

10

Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.

Spiritual Insight

Beat plowshares into swords, pruning hooks into spears — the reverse of the famous peace vision. Here it's irony: even turning every tool into a weapon won't help the nations against God's judgment.

11

Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.

Spiritual Insight

Assemble and come, all you nations — let God bring down His mighty ones. The invitation to battle is really a setup for their defeat. God's strength is not threatened by the combined power of all nations.

12

Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

Spiritual Insight

Let the nations wake up and come to the valley of Jehoshaphat, for God will sit to judge them. This is a courtroom scene — God on the bench, the nations on trial. Every act of injustice will be reviewed.

13

Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

Spiritual Insight

Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe — the winepress is full and overflows. The imagery shifts to harvest, but this is a harvest of judgment. When wickedness reaches its full measure, God's justice comes.

14

Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

Spiritual Insight

Multitudes in the valley of decision — the day of the LORD is near. This is the moment of final reckoning. Every person and nation stands at a crossroads, and God's presence makes it a place of decisive judgment.

15

The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

Spiritual Insight

Sun and moon darkened, stars withdrawing their shine — the cosmic signs return again. Creation itself bears witness to the gravity of God's judgment. The universe is not indifferent to what happens on earth.

16

The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

Spiritual Insight

The LORD will roar from Zion, and the heavens and earth will shake — but He will be the hope and strength of His people. In the same breath as terrifying judgment comes tender protection for those who belong to Him. God is both lion and refuge.

17

So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

Spiritual Insight

You will know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, and Jerusalem will be holy. The end goal of all God's activity is His dwelling with His people in holiness. Everything — judgment and restoration — serves this purpose.

18

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.

Spiritual Insight

Mountains dripping with new wine, hills flowing with milk, rivers of water — and a fountain from God's house watering the valley. This is the picture of total abundance, where God's presence transforms the entire landscape into a place of blessing.

19

Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.

Spiritual Insight

Egypt and Edom will become desolate because of their violence against Judah and for shedding innocent blood. Justice for the innocent is part of God's restoration plan. He doesn't forget the blood that was spilled.

20

But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

Spiritual Insight

Judah will dwell forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. After all the upheaval, this is the final word: permanence. God's people will have an enduring home. Stability and belonging are God's gifts to those who trust Him.

21

For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion.

Spiritual Insight

God will cleanse the blood that He has not yet cleansed, for the LORD dwells in Zion. The story ends not with destruction but with purification and presence. God's dwelling with His people is the final, beautiful resolution to all of history's pain.
