Ephesians Chapter 4

KJV — King James Version · 32 verses

1

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

Spiritual Insight

Walk worthy of your calling — not to earn it, but to reflect it. You've been given something precious; now live in a way that shows its value.

2

With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

Spiritual Insight

Lowliness, meekness, patience, bearing with one another in love — this is the wardrobe of Christian community. It's not glamorous, but it's beautiful.

3

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Spiritual Insight

Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Unity already exists in the Spirit; our job is to maintain it, not create it.

4

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

Spiritual Insight

One body, one Spirit, one hope — the 'ones' pile up. In a world obsessed with diversity, here is a diversity that finds its unity in one shared hope.

5

One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Spiritual Insight

One Lord, one faith, one baptism. The essentials that unite us are far more important than the differences that might divide us.

6

One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Spiritual Insight

One God and Father of all — above all, through all, in all. He's not a distant deity; He's intimately involved in every aspect of our existence.

7

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Spiritual Insight

Grace was given to each one of us according to Christ's measure. Nobody gets left out of the gift distribution. Your grace-gift is tailor-made for you.

8

Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

Spiritual Insight

When Christ ascended, He gave gifts to men — like a conqueror distributing spoils to His people. His victory became our endowment.

9

(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

Spiritual Insight

He descended first before He ascended. Jesus went to the lowest place before being lifted to the highest. The pattern of the gospel is always down before up.

10

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Spiritual Insight

The same one who descended also ascended far above all heavens — to fill all things. Jesus isn't partially present; He fills everything.

11

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Spiritual Insight

Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers — different roles, same purpose. God gives variety to His church because the job is too big for one kind of gift.

12

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Spiritual Insight

These gifts exist to equip the saints for ministry and build up the body. The goal isn't impressive leaders — it's equipped everyday people doing the real work.

13

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Spiritual Insight

Growing up into the full measure of Christ — maturity isn't optional for Christians. We're meant to keep growing until we look like Jesus.

14

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Spiritual Insight

No longer children tossed around by every wind of teaching. Spiritual maturity brings stability — the ability to stand firm when ideas and trends are blowing everywhere.

15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Spiritual Insight

Speaking the truth in love — truth without love is harsh, and love without truth is empty. We need both, growing up into Christ who is the head.

16

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Spiritual Insight

The whole body grows when each part does its work. Your contribution matters — the church doesn't fully thrive without your piece of the puzzle.

17

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

Spiritual Insight

Don't walk like the Gentiles in the vanity of their minds. The world's way of thinking leads to emptiness. There's a better path.

18

Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

Spiritual Insight

Darkened understanding, separated from the life of God, through ignorance and hardness of heart. Sin doesn't just affect behavior — it clouds thinking.

19

Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

Spiritual Insight

When people lose sensitivity, they give themselves over to every kind of impurity. It starts small — a gradual numbing of the conscience. That's why staying tender-hearted matters.

20

But ye have not so learned Christ;

Spiritual Insight

But you have not so learned Christ. What a powerful contrast — knowing Jesus changes everything. You learned a completely different way of living.

21

If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

Spiritual Insight

If you've heard Him and been taught by Him, the truth is in Jesus. Christian living flows from Christian learning — we live differently because we've been taught by the Master.

22

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Spiritual Insight

Put off the old self, corrupted by deceitful desires. The old you isn't being refurbished — it needs to be taken off entirely, like dirty clothes.

23

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Spiritual Insight

Be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Transformation starts in the mind. What you think shapes what you become. Renewal is an ongoing, daily process.

24

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Spiritual Insight

Put on the new self, created in righteousness and true holiness. You're not just leaving the old behind — you're stepping into something brand new that God designed specifically for you.

25

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Spiritual Insight

Put away lying and speak truth to your neighbor — because we're all part of one another. Honesty isn't just a rule; it's how healthy community works.

26

Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

Spiritual Insight

Be angry but don't sin — don't let the sun go down on your wrath. Anger itself isn't the enemy. It's what we do with it that matters. Process it quickly.

27

Neither give place to the devil.

Spiritual Insight

Don't give the devil an opportunity. Small compromises become open doors. The enemy looks for footholds, not front doors.

28

Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

Spiritual Insight

Stop stealing and start working so you can give to others. The transformation isn't just from wrong to neutral — it's from taking to giving.

29

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Spiritual Insight

Only say what builds others up and gives grace to those who hear. Your words are either construction materials or wrecking balls. Choose wisely.

30

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Spiritual Insight

Don't grieve the Holy Spirit. The Spirit has feelings — He can be saddened by our choices. That's how personal this relationship is.

31

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

Spiritual Insight

Bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander, malice — all of it has to go. These aren't just bad habits; they're toxins that poison your soul and your relationships.

32

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Spiritual Insight

Be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving — just as God forgave you. The standard of forgiveness isn't what they deserve; it's what you received. You forgive because you've been forgiven.
