1 Corinthians Chapter 11
KJV — King James Version · 34 verses
Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
Spiritual Insight
Follow Paul as he follows Christ — that's the ultimate chain of discipleship. You don't need to be perfect to be worth following, just sincerely pursuing Jesus.
Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
Spiritual Insight
Paul praises them before correcting them. Encouragement creates the soil where correction can actually take root and grow.
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Spiritual Insight
Christ is the head of every man, and God is the head of Christ. Headship here is about order and care, not superiority — even Christ submits to the Father.
Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
Spiritual Insight
A man praying with his head covered dishonors his head. Cultural symbols matter because they communicate something about our posture before God.
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
Spiritual Insight
A woman praying uncovered was seen as dishonoring. The principle beneath the custom is about approaching God with reverence and appropriate humility.
For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
Spiritual Insight
Paul uses strong language to make his point about cultural propriety. The specific practice may vary, but the heart of honoring God in worship never changes.
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
Spiritual Insight
Man reflects God's glory; woman reflects man's glory. Both are glorious — the point is that glory flows from God outward, creating a beautiful chain.
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
Spiritual Insight
Woman came from man in creation — not as lesser, but as derived. Our origin stories shape our identity, and every identity finds its source in God.
Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
Spiritual Insight
Woman was created for man — meaning relationship and complementarity were built in from the start. We were made for each other, not just for ourselves.
For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
Spiritual Insight
Because of the angels, a woman should have authority on her head. There's a cosmic dimension to worship — even angels observe how we approach God.
Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
Spiritual Insight
In the Lord, men and women are interdependent. Neither is complete without the other. Unity, not hierarchy, is the final word in Christ.
For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
Spiritual Insight
Woman comes from man, and man is born of woman — all things come from God. Mutuality and interdependence reflect the beautiful design of our Creator.
Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
Spiritual Insight
Paul invites them to judge for themselves. Faith isn't blind — it engages your mind and conscience. Think it through, and let the Spirit guide your conclusion.
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
Spiritual Insight
Even nature teaches certain things about propriety. God wrote some principles into the fabric of creation itself — we just need to pay attention.
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
Spiritual Insight
A woman's long hair is her glory, given as a natural covering. God's creation is full of beauty that serves purpose — form and function together.
But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
Spiritual Insight
If anyone wants to argue, the churches have no such custom of contention. Sometimes the best response to a debate is to point to the quiet consensus of God's people.
Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.
Spiritual Insight
Their gatherings were doing more harm than good. Church should be a place where people are built up, not torn down. If your gathering hurts, something is deeply wrong.
For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
Spiritual Insight
Divisions in the church — Paul had heard about them and partly believed it. Disunity is one of the oldest enemies of the gospel's credibility.
For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
Spiritual Insight
Factions have a painful purpose: they reveal who is genuinely approved by God. Trial by fire shows what's real — even in the church.
When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper.
Spiritual Insight
Coming together but not for the Lord's Supper — they were gathering around food, not around Christ. A gathering without Christ at the center is just a meeting.
For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.
Spiritual Insight
Some went hungry while others got drunk. The Lord's Supper became a display of selfishness instead of unity. When privilege replaces sharing, the table loses its meaning.
What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
Spiritual Insight
Do you despise the church and shame the poor? Paul is genuinely grieved. How we treat the vulnerable among us reveals what we really think of God's family.
For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
Spiritual Insight
Paul received this from the Lord Himself — the night Jesus was betrayed. In the darkest hour, Jesus instituted the most beautiful memorial. Grace shines brightest in shadows.
And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Spiritual Insight
He broke the bread and said, 'This is my body.' Every communion is an invitation to remember — not just the pain, but the love that chose to endure it for you.
After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
Spiritual Insight
The cup is the new covenant in His blood. Every time you drink it, you're remembering a promise sealed with sacrifice — and that promise still holds.
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
Spiritual Insight
Every time you eat and drink, you proclaim His death until He returns. Communion looks backward to the cross and forward to His coming — it lives in both directions.
Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
Spiritual Insight
Eating and drinking unworthily makes you guilty of Christ's body and blood. This isn't about being perfect — it's about treating what's holy with genuine reverence.
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
Spiritual Insight
Examine yourself before you eat. Honest self-reflection isn't condemnation — it's preparation. God meets the humble heart at the table.
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
Spiritual Insight
Not discerning the Lord's body brings judgment on yourself. The Lord's Supper isn't a ritual to rush through — it's an encounter to enter with awe.
For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
Spiritual Insight
Many were weak, sick, or had even died because of this. Paul connects spiritual carelessness with real consequences. God's discipline is real, and it's motivated by love.
For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
Spiritual Insight
If we judged ourselves, we wouldn't be judged. Self-examination is a gift — it lets us correct course before God needs to intervene.
But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
Spiritual Insight
When God disciplines us, it's to keep us from being condemned with the world. His correction is protective, not punitive — a father's love, not a judge's wrath.
Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.
Spiritual Insight
Wait for each other. The simplest instruction — and yet so hard when we're hungry and self-focused. Patience at the table is an act of love.
And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
Spiritual Insight
If you're hungry, eat at home. Church gatherings aren't about satisfying appetites — they're about feeding souls. Keep the main thing the main thing.
